This podcast features NAVSUP Vice Commander Kurt Wendelken answering the question, "How will NSS-Supply affect NAVSUP employees?"
Naval Sustainment System-Supply (NSS-Supply) is a combination of commercial best practices, process improvements, governance and oversight to maximize efficiencies and effectiveness within available means. With NAVSUP oversight, NSS-Supply will initiate a multi-year journey focusing on expanding competition with suppliers while deepening supplier partnerships and integrating existing supply chain resources toward a common goal.
PODCAST Transcript
Question: How will NSS-Supply affect NAVSUP employees?
NAVSUP Vice Commander Mr. Kurt Wendelken responds.
I think it's really going to be mixed. I would say for the vast majority of NAVSUP employees, I don't know that there's going to be a significant change really early on. And I know that that's a really pressing question for people because they're committed to the mission and they want to do the right thing. I think as we go forward, we're going to see places where we can play a role. One of the areas where we're very interested is increasing velocity and depot level repairables. So, what that means is a depot level repairable. Let’s imagine we're a radar for an F-18 and we're in what's called A-condition, which means it's ready to be put on an airplane when its radar breaks. So, when that happens, the broken radar then enters the repair cycle. That radar would be on an aircraft carrier. It would be shipped from wherever that aircraft carrier is in the world back to an ATAC, which is our facilities that process these depot level repairables. And then that ATAC--after WSS has a contract in place--would send that depot level repairable to be repaired, restored to A-condition. And then it would be returned either to the shelf on that ship or to the shelf ashore, ready to be used either by that unit or another unit…and one of the things that we've observed is there are delays in that process and by benchmarking industry and taking the world-class examples, we know that by removing those delays, we're going to be able to get better performance and better readiness for Navy. So, I think that will be a place where folks at WSS--be it Mechanicsburg or Philadelphia--will play a role. Folks at the ATACs will play a role. Some NAVSUP employees will be engaging with the fleet to encourage the fleet to get that broken piece of gear on its way back to us so we can fix it. So, again, I think right up front, I don't think they are going to be a lot of changes for our employees. But, I think there will be roles and responsibilities that we will be playing both in our traditional missions to help track the performance of the other pillar areas for NSS-Supply.
NAVSUP's mission is to deliver sustained global logistics and quality-of-life support to the Navy and Joint warfighter. We manage supply chains that provide material for Navy aircraft, surface ships, submarines and their associated weapons systems. We provide centralized inventory management for Navy's non-nuclear ordnance stockpile. We provide a wide range of base operating and waterfront logistics support services, coordinating material deliveries, contracting for supplies and services, and providing material management and warehousing services.
We are responsible for many of the Quality of Life programs that touch the lives of Sailors and their families every day, including Navy Exchanges, Navy Lodges, the Navy Personal Property Program, and the Navy Postal System. We administer the Navy Food Service Program, with responsibility for the policies and procedures that govern the day to day operations of general messes afloat and ashore.
